Show Choir Tips and Tricks

I am about to enter competition season for my second year of show choir, and I decided that the best way to celebrate is to make a list of what I wish I had known last year.

Hair

If your show choir prefers curls, I have found that this wand works the best. Wand curls tend to last longer and look bouncier. Remember, show choir hair isn’t supposed to look normal, it should be over the top. For hair spray, I love using Pump It Up! (the only place I have found it is at Dollar General) on a section, letting it dry, and then curling it. Spray your hair with an aerosol hairspray (there really isn’t much of a difference, but I use this) after each layer, and once you’ve finished curling your hair.

If you need to have straight hair, try spraying this spray before flat ironing your hair. Generally, any straightener will work.

Often, each show choir requires a specific style of bump. If you are just told to have a bump, without specific instructions, this is how I would do it. Separate the hair that you will bump. Section that piece of hair parallel to your forehead in 3 pieces. On the bottom section of hair, tease the top side. On the middle section, tease both the top and the bottom side. Do not tease any of the top section. In all your teasing, have most of the teasing occur closest to the forehead. Stack the sections again, smooth the top section over the teasing, and bobbby pin them, ensuring that it stays fluffed.

Overall, particular for competitions, I highly recommend finding someone who isn’t busy and getting them to do your hair. If you are in a prep group, see if someone in varsity is available. Or, see if anyone in pit is bored. This works even better if you identify someone before competition season begins, and have them do it every time. This will save you a ton of time, as you can do your makeup while they do your hair.

Makeup

Makeup will also strongly depend on what your director wants. You will definitely need liquid foundation. If you have foundation that is more of a “summer” color for you, that will help you show up better on stage. MAKE SURE YOU BLEND DOWN YOUR NECK AND CHEST. Before performing, run a trial with your selected primer, foundation, and powder where you are sweating for 10-15 minutes, just to make sure your foundation isn’t going to completely melt. I would recommend using a beauty blender or a knock-off (I like this or this), just make sure you get to the bathroom to get it wet prior to getting all situated. In addition, a buffing brush like this, this, or this is fantastic, and more convenient. If you don’t have darker foundation, use bronzer to frame your face, below your cheekbones, and down your neck. Use a bright blush, about the color of your natural lips, on the apples of your cheeks, blending back.

Regardless of the color eyeshadow requested by your director, make sure you use a primer. My favorite is this one in sheer, or pearl if you need anything but neutrals. Make sure you apply and blend this all the way from your lash line to your eyebrows. If you need neutral eyeshadows, I highly recommend Naked palettes, either the original, or the second. I personally use UD Suspect on the inner half of my eye, and UD Snakebite on the outer half and crease, dragging the color up to just below my browbone. I then blend a little bit of UD Undone in my outer corner, and UD Foxy on my browbone. Use a dark brown or black kohl eyeliner on your upper eyelid, add a volumizing mascara (this is my favorite), and you’re done!

Finally, make sure you bring lipstick!!! As facials are so important to a performance, make sure your judges can see them. Many directors have a color preference, otherwise, just bring a dark pink. I have always used Maybelline Color Sensational in Hooked on Pink, but find something that matches your skin tone.

Miscellaneous Tips

  • To get more traction on your character shoes, put a piece of duct tape on the toes, and lightly scratch it with a key.
  • Hairspray is a good quick fix for tight runs, and clear nail polish all around the hole is even better!
  • Know ahead of time that all concession food will be ridiculously expensive. If you are allowed, consider bringing some snacks with you. I would recommend bringing $20-30 dollars in fives or tens to purchase food.
  • Check your teeth for lipstick before leaving your homeroom. 🙂

Feel free to ask any questions you have, I have no idea if my writing makes sense 🙂

Perlier Shea Butter White Lily Hand Cream

When I got the opportunity to review the Perlier Shea Butter White Lily Hand Cream through iFabbo, I was super excited. I just knew that this would be perfect for dry Iowa winters, and it totally is!

First, let’s look at Perlier’s description. Italics come directly from the company

  • Formulated with 100% organic shea butter and extracts of white lily
  • Soothing and emollient properties
  • Grants a smooth appearance to the skin

Perlier has extracted from the fruits of the Tree of Youth an important part of Shea Butter: 100% Organic, with extraordinary regenerating, nourishing, and protective properties. The new moisturizing Hand Cream, made up with 15% of Shea Butter and White Lily Extracts with lenitive and emollient properties, it grants smoothness to the most sensitive skins.

And here’s the ingredient list:

Overall, this is a very soothing hand cream. It rubs in quickly, and leaves your hands moisturized for about an hour, before you feel like you need to reapply. I like using this hand cream right before bed and before I leave for school. It also works really well on my feet after I’ve showered and pumiced. I just rub it in, put fuzzy or cotton socks on, and go to bed. In the morning, my feet are super soft. The only (minor) downside is the scent. Perlier describes the fragrance as such:

  • Top: Lemon, crunchy green apple and lily of the valley
  • Middle: Rose petal, peony, peach flowers and white lily accord
  • Bottom: Cedarwood, white musk and shea butter accord

The scent is nice, but very strong. I have received nothing but compliments on it, but it’s something to be aware of if you typically wear a perfume, as it may conflict and get weird.

I would definitely recommend this product. I have a 6.7 fl. oz. size tube, and I’ve barely made a dent in it over around 3 weeks of consistent use. You can buy the 6.7 oz tube here for $24 plus s/h, or a 3.3 oz tube for $17 here.

Until next time,

Heather

Review: Perlier Imperial Honey Body Butter

I received this product through iFabbo:  to those bloggers who don’t already have an account, I definitely recommend applying. I was required to post a review on this product, however, I am as always posting my honest opinion on the product.

perlier body butter

I was originally super excited about receiving this product, especially with winter (dry skin season) approaching.

I really wanted to like this, but I simply couldn’t. The packaging itself is absolutely gorgeous and luxurious. When I opened the shipping box, I was super excited. However, once I opened the container, I reeled back. This body butter smells incredibly strong. It smells artificially sweet. I normally prefer sweet scents, but this was too strong, even for me.

The texture is incredibly thick, to the point of being not-so- good. It looks like sour cream or paste, not something to smear on your body.

When I put the body butter on my legs after I showered and shaved, it took a great deal of effort to get it to sink into my skin, as parched as my skin is after a shower.

This retails here on HSN for $40 USD, with $4.96 shipping and handling. It is currently sold out, but I’m sure it will be back soon.  If you can deal with strong scents, and really like super thick lotions, you can use the coupon code iFabbo5 to get $5 off your order. (This coupon code expires on 12/31/13, so it’s perfect for Christmas)

Will you try this? What do you think?

October Favorites 2013

All products and services mentioned in this post have been purchased by me, and these are my honest opinions.

Hi All! It’s monthly favorites time! Today I’ve got four makeup products, one nail polish, and a perfume. It is a bit on the smaller side, but that is just because I tried to hold myself back on buying products this month.

October 2013

My first favorite is an eyeshadow quad. This is Maybelline’s ExpertWear Eyeshadow Quad in Designer Chocolates. This is a super gorgeous, shimmery palette. Almost everyday, I’ve used the enclosed sponge applicators to put the lightest color on my lid and browbone, the “crease” color in my outer corner, and the “liner” color in my crease and lash line.

My next favorite is my NYColor Smooth Skin Loose Face Powder in Translucent, which I am almost out of! I just bought more at Target. I love this, especially for the price! I apply it all over my face with my Laura Mercier Powder puff.

My other face product I’ve been loving this month has been my Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles. Mine is in the shade Brightening, This is an awesome undereye concealer, as well as covering up the redness around my nose. I simply apply this before foundation directly to my face, then blending with a clean finger.

My final makeup product this month is a mascara. This is the Covergirl Professional All-In-One Waterproof Mascara in Very Black. This was the first mascara I ever purchased, and I’ve just recently gone back to it. My lashes work best with a drier mascara, which I believe is why this works so much better for me now.

My favorite Scent of the month is my Carried Away mini fragrance mist by Bath & Body Works. This has been my go-to all month.  I also adore this packaging!

Last, but certainly not least, is my favorite nail product of the month. This is Sinful Color’s Snow Me White. This is the first opaque white I’ve ever seen, and it is good! The price, of course,  just makes it sweeter!

These are my October Favorites! Comment below with what yours are, I love finding new and awesome products to try!

August Favorites

It’s the first week of the month, which means… you guessed it, a favorites post! For some reason, all but one of my products are very neutral this month. I don’t know why, that’s just how it worked out.

My one bright product is the Covergirl Outlast Stay Brilliant nail polish in 300 Vio-Last. This is a blue-purple color. This is actually really opaque with only two coats, which is awesome! I also really love the square packaging, I haven’t seen it anywhere else. I have worn this on my toes all month, along with Nicole by OPI’s Modern Family A Phil’s Paradise, a gorgeous sparkly silver-gold. DSCN0475

My next favorite is a lip combination. I finally figured out that while Covergirl’s Outlast Stay fabulous 3 in 1 foundation doesn’t work well on my face, it does a really good job covering my lips when I want to do a nude lip. I like to then layer Ulta’s lipstick 226 Perfect Nude, Maybelline’s Colorsensational Lipstick in 705 Twinkle, and Too Faced Glamour Gloss in Flirt. This has been how I have done my lips almost all month, along with bold eyes. I think it’s perfect because my lips are still well defined, but not stealing the show.

My next favorite is an eyeliner. This is the Maybelline Unstoppable eyeliner in pewter. I love this eyeliner because it defines really well without making my eye look really small. It’s also an automatic sharpener, which is awesome.

Another favorite is the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk. This pencil is great for layering under eyeshadow, and brightening colors. I have been using this a ton with my BHCosmetics palette. I also like using a very small amount of this on my browbone, tear duct, bridge of my nose, and cheekbones as a subtle highlight.

My last two favorites of the month are both face products. The first is my Maybelline Fit Me Foundation in 110 Porcelain. This was my first foundation, and I have no idea why I stopped using it in the first place. It is really lightweight, easy to blend, and matches perfectly. The only downside is that it does leave my face really shiny. This isn’t really a big deal, as I have to powder my face anyways. I have recently discovered the Laura Mercier velour puff for powder. This is honestly a life saver. My face looks flawless when I use this puff to apply my NYC Smooth Skin translucent loose powder. All of you need to go buy yourselves a velour powder puff!

These are all of my August Favorites, now I would love to hear what yours are! Please leave a comment below telling me your favorite products of August. Who knows, I might decide to try some of them out! See you guys next time!
